Honest Pros & Cons
The ESP32-H2 is Espressif’s low-power radio chip for IEEE 802.15.4 networks. A 96 MHz RISC-V core, Bluetooth 5 (LE) and an 802.15.4 radio let it run Thread, Zigbee 3.0 and Matter-over-Thread firmware, which makes it the natural choice for battery-powered sensors, smart switches and door contacts that join a mesh network instead of your Wi-Fi.
What the H2 deliberately leaves out is Wi-Fi. That keeps power consumption low, but it means an H2 cannot be a Thread Border Router or a Wi-Fi Zigbee gateway on its own; for those you pair it with a Wi-Fi ESP32 as the host. This guide covers 7 ESP32-H2 boards and 2 companion boards for exactly that job. ESP32-H2 boards are still a small, young market on Amazon, so several picks have only a handful of reviews, and we say so on each card.
π‘ Before you buy: The ESP32-H2 has no Wi-Fi; it talks Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth LE only. To control Thread devices you need a Thread Border Router (an Apple TV, HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub, Home Assistant with a Thread radio, or a DIY ESP32 + ESP32-H2 build). For Zigbee you need a coordinator. If you want one chip that does Wi-Fi and Thread or Zigbee, look at the ESP32-C6 instead. Boards built on the bare ESP32-H2FH4S chip are tiny and cheap; boards built on the ESP32-H2-MINI-1 module use Espressif’s pre-certified RF module, which matters if you plan a product. Espressif’s official ESP Thread Border Router board is only listed on Amazon as its Ethernet sub-board, which doesn’t work alone, so we left it out.

π What to Look for in an ESP32-H2 Board
π§±
Bare Chip or Certified Module
Mini and Zero boards put the ESP32-H2FH4S chip (with 4 MB flash in the package) straight on a tiny PCB. Boards using the ESP32-H2-MINI-1 module carry Espressif’s RF certifications, which saves cost and time if your prototype will become a product.
πΈοΈ
Thread, Zigbee or Matter
Every ESP32-H2 board runs all three, but the firmware differs: OpenThread for Thread, the ESP Zigbee SDK for Zigbee, and ESP-Matter for Matter-over-Thread devices commissioned over BLE. Pick the stack based on the ecosystem you already use at home.
π
Power and Sleep
The H2’s main advantage over Wi-Fi chips is battery life as a Thread Sleepy End Device or Zigbee end device. Small boards without power LEDs or always-on USB chips get closest to the chip’s real sleep current; full dev boards are better for debugging.
π
USB and Debugging
The ESP32-H2 has native USB Serial/JTAG, so a single USB-C cable can flash, log and debug. Some boards add a USB-UART bridge too, which is handy when you need a second console for OpenThread CLI while debugging.
π
Border Router Plans
If you want to build your own Thread Border Router, you need two chips: a Wi-Fi ESP32 (such as an ESP32-S3) running the border router host and an ESP32-H2 running the RCP (radio co-processor) firmware, connected over UART.

Waveshare ESP32-H2 Mini Development Board
β 4.6/5 Β· The Best-Rated ESP32-H2 Board on Amazon
802.15.4
THREAD + ZIGBEE 3.0
Buy on Amazon β

Waveshare’s ESP32-H2 Mini is the best-rated ESP32-H2 board we found on Amazon (about 4.7 stars from 10 ratings, a small but encouraging base). It’s built around the ESP32-H2FH4S, which puts the RISC-V core, 4 MB of flash, Bluetooth 5 (LE) and the IEEE 802.15.4 radio in one package, so the board stays tiny while giving you everything needed for Thread, Zigbee 3.0 and Matter-over-Thread end devices. A USB-C port connects to the H2’s native USB Serial/JTAG for flashing, logs and debugging, and Waveshare publishes ESP-IDF and Arduino examples. It’s a great first H2 board for a battery-powered Zigbee sensor or a Thread light switch. Only 2 were left in stock when we checked, so the 3-pack below is a good fallback.
β

Buy on Amazon β

If you want a conventional, breadboard-friendly ESP32-H2 board, the ESP32-H2-DEV-KIT-N4 (a Waveshare design, sold here by Wonraba) is the one to get. It uses Espressif’s ESP32-H2-MINI-1-N4 module, so the RF section is the same pre-certified module you would design into a product. The clever part is its CH343 USB-UART bridge plus CH334 USB hub: one USB-C cable gives you both the H2’s native USB Serial/JTAG and a separate UART port, so you can watch the OpenThread or Zigbee console while debugging over JTAG. The pinout matches Espressif’s ESP32-H2-DevKitM-1, so official examples and pin maps work unchanged. Reviews are few (about 4.3 stars from 3 ratings).
β
Pros- Pre-certified MINI-1 module
- USB + UART on one cable
- DevKitM-1 compatible pins
- Breadboard friendly
β Cons- Very few reviews
- Sold by a reseller

πΈοΈ BEST FOR MESH TESTING Β· β 4.4/53. Waveshare ESP32-H2 Mini Development Board (3-Pack)
3 Γ ESP32-H2FH4S Β· 96 MHz RISC-V Β· 4 MB flash Β· Thread, Zigbee 3.0, BLE 5 Β· USB-C
Buy Here β

Thread and Zigbee are mesh protocols, and you only really learn them with several nodes talking: a leader, routers and a sleepy end device, or a Zigbee coordinator with a router and an end device. Waveshare’s 3-pack of ESP32-H2 Mini boards gives you that test network in one order, with the same 96 MHz RISC-V core, 4 MB flash and 802.15.4 radio as our top pick. Use one as an OpenThread CLI leader, one as a router and one as a battery-powered end device, and you can watch the mesh form and heal. The listing is new with no reviews yet, but it’s the same board as our top pick from Waveshare’s own store. Stock was low when we checked.
β
Pros: Three nodes in one order; same board as our top pick; ideal for mesh learning.
β Cons: No reviews on this listing yet; low stock.
π― Verdict: The easiest way to build a three-node Thread or Zigbee test network.
π‘ BEST DIY BORDER ROUTER RADIO Β· β 4.4/54. M5Stack ESP32-H2 Thread/Zigbee Gateway Unit
ESP32-H2-MINI-1-N2 Β· 2 MB flash Β· Zigbee 3.0, Thread 1.3, Matter Β· Grove Port C (UART) Β· PCB antenna
Buy Here β

M5Stack’s ESP32-H2 Gateway Unit is an 802.15.4 radio in a small plastic case that plugs into any M5Stack controller, or any ESP32 board, through a Grove UART port. Inside is an ESP32-H2-MINI-1-N2 certified module with 2 MB of flash, and M5Stack positions it for Zigbee 3.0, Thread 1.3 and Matter gateway projects. That makes it the tidiest radio half of a DIY Thread Border Router or Zigbee gateway: flash it with Espressif’s RCP firmware, connect it to a Wi-Fi ESP32 running the border router host, and you avoid loose wires and bare boards. There’s only one review so far (5 stars), so treat it as promising rather than proven.
β
Pros: Certified module in a case; Grove plug-and-play; built for gateway use.
β Cons: 2 MB flash; needs a host board; only one review.
π― Verdict: The neatest ESP32-H2 radio for a DIY Thread Border Router or Zigbee gateway.
πΉ BEST TINY SENSOR NODE Β· β 4.0/55. Waveshare ESP32-H2-Zero Mini Development Board
ESP32-H2FH4S Β· 96 MHz RISC-V Β· 320 KB SRAM Β· 4 MB flash Β· DevKitM-1 compatible pins Β· USB-C
Buy Here β

The ESP32-H2-Zero follows Waveshare’s popular Zero form factor: a postage-stamp board with USB-C, the ESP32-H2FH4S with 4 MB flash and 320 KB SRAM, and pins arranged to stay compatible with Espressif’s ESP32-H2-DevKitM-1. Its small size and lack of extra chips make it a good fit for a battery-powered Zigbee temperature sensor, a door contact or a Thread button that you tuck inside an enclosure, and Waveshare provides ESP-IDF and Arduino IDE examples. Reviews are mixed but few (about 3.8 stars from 7 ratings), and stock was down to 2 when we checked.
β
Pros: Tiny; DevKitM-1 pin compatible; low-power friendly; USB-C.
β Cons: Mixed early reviews; few pins; low stock.
π― Verdict: A tiny ESP32-H2 for battery sensor nodes that need to hide inside an enclosure.
𧩠BEST FOR CUSTOM PCBS Β· β 4.0/56. Waveshare ESP32-H2 Castellated Development Board (2-Pack)
ESP32-H2FH4S Β· 96 MHz RISC-V Β· 4 MB flash Β· castellated edges Β· USB-C
Buy Here β

When your prototype moves from a breadboard to your own PCB, castellated boards save a lot of RF layout work. This Waveshare 2-pack uses the same ESP32-H2FH4S with 4 MB flash and USB-C, and Waveshare notes the castellated module edges let you solder it directly onto a carrier board, like an SMD module. That’s ideal for a custom Zigbee wall switch, a Thread sensor with its own battery holder, or a small batch of Matter-over-Thread devices for your home. It’s a new listing with no reviews yet, sold by Waveshare directly.
β
Pros: Solders onto your own PCB; two boards; USB-C for development.
β Cons: No reviews yet; bare chip rather than certified module.
π― Verdict: The easiest way to put an ESP32-H2 onto your own carrier PCB.
π° BEST BUDGET OPTION Β· β 3.8/57. Teyleten Robot ESP32-H2 SuperMini (3-Pack)
ESP32-H2 Β· 96 MHz RISC-V Β· IEEE 802.15.4 + BLE Β· SuperMini form factor
Buy Here β

The SuperMini form factor made the ESP32-C3 a budget favorite, and Teyleten Robot’s ESP32-H2 SuperMini 3-pack brings the same idea to the H2: three small boards with the 96 MHz RISC-V core, the 802.15.4 radio and Bluetooth LE, at the lowest cost per board in this guide. They’re a good way to scatter several Zigbee or Thread nodes around the house for experiments. The listing is new with no reviews and doesn’t state flash size clearly, and SuperMini boards are known for simple voltage regulators and small antennas, so expect less range than the Waveshare boards and keep these for learning rather than permanent installs.
β
Pros: Three boards; lowest cost per node; small size.
β Cons: No reviews; specs not fully stated; shorter range likely.
π― Verdict: Cheap ESP32-H2 boards for mesh experiments, not long-term installs.

π BEST BORDER ROUTER HOST Β· β 4.5/58. Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3
ESP32-S3R8 Β· dual-core 240 MHz Β· 8 MB flash + 8 MB PSRAM Β· Wi-Fi + BLE 5 Β· U.FL antenna Β· 21 Γ 17.8 mm
Buy Here β

Espressif’s open-source ESP Thread Border Router design splits the job in two: a Wi-Fi ESP32 runs the border router host, and an ESP32-H2 runs the RCP (radio co-processor) firmware, linked over UART. The XIAO ESP32S3 is our pick for the host half. Its ESP32-S3 with 8 MB of PSRAM has plenty of headroom for the OpenThread host stack and a web interface, it has a U.FL connector for a better Wi-Fi antenna, and it’s small enough to sit next to an H2 board or the M5Stack H2 unit in a compact enclosure. It’s a proven board (about 4.6 stars from hundreds of ratings) that also works as a Zigbee gateway host.
β
Pros: S3 with 8 MB PSRAM; Wi-Fi + U.FL antenna; tiny; proven.
β Cons: No 802.15.4 radio itself; needs an H2 board alongside.
π― Verdict: The Wi-Fi host to pair with any ESP32-H2 board for a DIY Thread Border Router.
πΆ WHEN YOU ALSO NEED WI-FI Β· β 4.6/59. Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32C6
ESP32-C6 Β· Wi-Fi 6 Β· Bluetooth 5.3 Β· Thread Β· Zigbee Β· Matter Β· XIAO form factor
Buy Here β

Sometimes the honest answer is that you don’t need an ESP32-H2 at all. The ESP32-C6 has the same 802.15.4 radio for Thread and Zigbee plus Wi-Fi 6, so one chip can be a Matter-over-Wi-Fi device, a Thread end device, or a Zigbee node that also reports over Wi-Fi. Seeed’s XIAO ESP32C6 is the best-reviewed C6 board on Amazon (about 4.7 stars from 160+ ratings). Choose the H2 when battery life matters most and the device will live entirely on Thread or Zigbee; choose the C6 when it’s mains-powered or needs Wi-Fi. Our ESP32-C6 buying guide covers 12 C6 boards.
β
Pros: Wi-Fi 6 + Thread + Zigbee on one chip; strong reviews; tiny.
β Cons: Higher power than an H2 for pure Thread or Zigbee devices.
π― Verdict: Pick this over an H2 when your Thread or Zigbee device also needs Wi-Fi.

β Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ESP32-H2 have Wi-Fi?
No. The ESP32-H2 has Bluetooth 5 (LE) and an IEEE 802.15.4 radio for Thread and Zigbee, but no Wi-Fi. That’s a deliberate choice for low power. If your device needs Wi-Fi as well, use an ESP32-C6, or pair the H2 with a Wi-Fi ESP32.
Can an ESP32-H2 work as a Thread Border Router?
Not alone, because a border router needs a Wi-Fi or Ethernet link. The standard approach is Espressif’s ESP Thread Border Router design: an ESP32-H2 runs the RCP firmware and connects over UART to a Wi-Fi ESP32 (such as an ESP32-S3) running the border router host. See our OpenThread Border Router guide and our Thread protocol overview.
Can I build Matter devices with the ESP32-H2?
Yes. The ESP32-H2 is a good fit for Matter-over-Thread end devices such as sensors, switches and lights, built with Espressif’s ESP-Matter SDK. Devices are commissioned over Bluetooth LE and then join your Thread network through an existing border router. Our Matter overview and Matter 1.4 article explain how it fits together.
Can I program the ESP32-H2 with the Arduino IDE?
Yes. The Arduino-ESP32 core version 3.x supports the ESP32-H2, including Zigbee examples. For Thread, Matter and full control over low-power modes, ESP-IDF is the better choice. Set it up with our ESP-IDF installation guide.
ESP32-H2 or ESP32-C6: which should I buy?
Choose the ESP32-H2 for battery-powered devices that live entirely on Thread or Zigbee, where low power matters most. Choose the ESP32-C6 for mains-powered devices, Wi-Fi gateways and anything that needs Wi-Fi 6 alongside Thread or Zigbee. Our ESP32-C6 buying guide compares C6 boards.
