🚀 Best ESP32-S3 Development Boards

12 ESP32-S3 boards for ESP-IDF, Arduino and MicroPython, from N16R8 DevKitC-1 boards and thumb-sized XIAO modules to T-Display and 7 inch touchscreen HMI boards, camera boards for vision AI and a voice assistant board, with verified Amazon links and honest verdicts.

✅ 12 Boards Reviewed ✅ Verified Amazon ASINs ✅ Flash & PSRAM Checked ✅ Honest Pros & Cons

The ESP32-S3 is the workhorse of Espressif’s lineup today. It pairs a dual-core Xtensa LX7 CPU at up to 240 MHz with vector instructions for neural network inference, a native USB OTG port, a built-in USB Serial/JTAG controller, an LCD and camera interface, and support for large octal PSRAM. That combination is why it shows up in everything from simple sensor nodes to touchscreen control panels, camera streamers and offline voice assistants. If you write firmware in ESP-IDF, the built-in USB JTAG alone is a big upgrade: you can step through code in VS Code over a single USB cable with no external debug probe.

The problem is choice. Amazon lists hundreds of ESP32-S3 boards, and the names hide the details that matter: how much flash and PSRAM the module has, whether both USB ports are wired, which GPIOs the PSRAM eats, and whether a display or camera is actually supported by working examples. This guide narrows it down to 12 boards you can buy today, grouped into general-purpose DevKitC-1 style boards, tiny boards for wearables and batteries, display and HMI boards, and AI camera and voice boards. Every pick is an ESP32-S3, and every link points to the exact listing we checked.

💡 Reality check before you buy: The ESP32-S3 has Wi-Fi 4 (2.4 GHz) and Bluetooth 5 LE only. It does not support Bluetooth Classic, Wi-Fi 6, Thread or Zigbee, so pick an original ESP32 for classic Bluetooth audio or an ESP32-C6/H2 for Matter over Thread. Espressif’s own ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N8R8 listing on Amazon is currently unavailable, so most DevKitC-1 boards you will find are third-party copies of the same reference design; the good ones work identically, but quality control varies by seller. On boards with octal PSRAM (any “R8” module), GPIO35, GPIO36 and GPIO37 are used by the memory and are not available for your project. Display and camera boards are only as good as their example code, so stick to vendors with maintained GitHub repos. Finally, “AI” on an ESP32-S3 means small models such as face detection, wake words and simple image classification through ESP-DL, ESP-WHO and ESP-SR, not large language models running on the chip.

🔍 What to Look for in an ESP32-S3 Board

🧠

Flash and PSRAM (N16R8 vs N8R8)

The module suffix tells you the memory: N16R8 means 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM. You want 8 MB PSRAM for displays, cameras, LVGL, audio buffers and ESP-DL models. 16 MB flash leaves room for OTA partitions, SPIFFS or LittleFS and font assets. Boards with 2 MB PSRAM are fine for sensors and simple IoT.

🔌

One USB Port or Two

Dual USB-C boards give you a USB-to-UART port for reliable flashing and logs plus the native USB port for HID, mass storage and built-in JTAG debugging. Single-port boards use native USB only, which works well but can disappear from your PC when your firmware crashes or reconfigures USB.

📐

Form Factor and Usable GPIO

DevKitC-1 style boards expose almost every pin but are too wide for one standard breadboard. XIAO and Nano boards are tiny but expose far fewer GPIOs. Remember that octal PSRAM modules reserve GPIO35 to GPIO37, and strapping pins such as GPIO0, GPIO3, GPIO45 and GPIO46 need care.

🖼️

Display and Camera Interface

Small displays use SPI or 8-bit parallel; large 7 inch panels use the RGB interface, which consumes many GPIOs and needs PSRAM for frame buffers. Camera boards use the DVP interface. Check that the vendor ships working LVGL or esp32-camera examples for the exact board revision.

📡

Antenna and Power

PCB antennas are fine on the desk; a U.FL or IPEX connector helps inside metal enclosures or at range. For battery projects look for an onboard LiPo charger and a low-quiescent regulator, then measure deep-sleep current yourself, because many dev boards waste milliamps on LEDs and USB bridges.

Hosyond ESP32-S3 N16R8 development board 3-pack with dual USB-C

If you want one board to learn and prototype on, get a DevKitC-1 style board with an N16R8 module, and Hosyond’s 3-pack is the best-reviewed in-stock option on Amazon right now (about 4.4 stars from 130+ ratings). Each board carries an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 with 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM, which is the most memory you can get on a standard WROOM module and enough for LVGL, camera frame buffers and ESP-DL models. The two USB-C ports are the real advantage: one goes through a USB-to-UART bridge for rock-solid flashing and serial logs, the other is the S3’s native USB for HID, USB mass storage and the built-in USB Serial/JTAG debugger. The pinout follows Espressif’s reference design, so every ESP-IDF example and pin diagram for the DevKitC-1 applies. Espressif’s own N8R8 DevKitC-1 is currently unavailable on Amazon, and this is the most practical substitute. Getting three boards also means you can test ESP-NOW, I2C or SPI master/slave between boards straight away.

✅ Pros
  • Maximum WROOM memory: 16 MB + 8 MB
  • UART and native USB both wired
  • Reference DevKitC-1 pinout
  • Three boards per pack
❌ Cons
  • Third-party copy, not Espressif-branded
  • Too wide for one breadboard
  • No LiPo charging
🎯 Verdict: The default ESP32-S3 board for ESP-IDF and Arduino work. Maximum memory, both USB paths and the standard pinout.

Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 Sense with camera and microphone

The XIAO ESP32S3 Sense is the most popular ESP32-S3 board on Amazon for vision and audio projects (about 4.3 stars from 360+ ratings), and it earns that by packing a lot into almost nothing. The base board has an ESP32-S3R8 with 8 MB PSRAM and 8 MB flash, LiPo charging and a U.FL antenna connector, and the Sense expansion adds a detachable camera module, a digital microphone and a microSD slot. The current Amazon listing describes an OV3660 sensor at 2048 × 1536 that is also compatible with OV5640, while older stock and Seeed’s own page show the OV2640, so check the listing if the exact sensor matters to you. This is a natural fit for ESP-WHO face detection, Edge Impulse or TensorFlow Lite Micro image classifiers, and ESP-SR wake-word demos, and Seeed’s wiki has working examples for each. The trade-off is pins: the XIAO footprint exposes only a handful of GPIOs, and the camera and SD card use several of them.

✅ Pros
  • Camera, mic and microSD included
  • 8 MB PSRAM for frame buffers
  • LiPo charging and U.FL antenna
  • Excellent vendor examples
❌ Cons
  • Very few free GPIOs
  • Runs warm when streaming
  • Camera sensor varies by batch
🎯 Verdict: The easiest way to start vision and voice AI on an ESP32-S3, in a board small enough for a wearable or doorbell.

🧰 BEST SOLDERLESS KIT · ⭐ 4.5/5

3. Lonely Binary ESP32-S3 N16R8 (3-Pack) + Terminal Bases

WROOM-1 N16R8 · 16 MB flash + 8 MB PSRAM · dual USB-C · immersion gold PCB · pre-soldered headers · 3 terminal expansion bases
Buy Here →
Lonely Binary ESP32-S3 N16R8 3-pack with terminal expansion bases

The DevKitC-1 layout has one annoying flaw: it is too wide to leave a free row on both sides of a standard breadboard. Lonely Binary solves that by bundling each of its three N16R8 boards with a terminal expansion base, so you plug the pre-soldered board in and wire sensors, relays and motor drivers with screw terminals instead of jumper spaghetti. The boards themselves use a black PCB with immersion gold (ENIG) plating, dual USB-C, and can be powered from USB-C or a 5 to 12 V VIN pin. It is the kit we’d hand to someone building a permanent home-automation node or a classroom bench. Ratings are strong (about 4.5 stars from 50+ reviews), and it carries a 1-year warranty.

✅ Pros: Screw-terminal wiring; 16 MB + 8 MB; 5 to 12 V VIN; solid build.
❌ Cons: Costs more than bare boards; bases add bulk; PCB antenna only.
🎯 Verdict: The tidiest way to build real ESP32-S3 projects without soldering or breadboard fights.

Buy Here →
Arduino Nano ESP32 with headers ABX00083, ESP32-S3 based

The Arduino Nano ESP32 is the most-reviewed ESP32-S3 board in this guide (about 4.6 stars from 590+ ratings). It puts an ESP32-S3 inside a certified u-blox NORA-W106 module on the classic Nano footprint, with 16 MB of flash and 8 MB of PSRAM, USB-C, an RGB LED and a VIN input rated for 6 to 21 V. Arduino officially supports it in the IDE, in Arduino Cloud and with a MicroPython installer, so it drops neatly into existing Nano shields and classroom material. ESP-IDF works too, since it is an ordinary ESP32-S3 underneath. Keep in mind that the Nano pin labels (D0 to D13, A0 to A7) differ from ESP32 GPIO numbers, which trips up people porting ESP-IDF code, and the official board costs more than generic S3 boards.

✅ Pros: Certified module; 16 MB + 8 MB; huge review base; official Arduino support.
❌ Cons: Pricier than clones; Nano pin naming confuses GPIO mapping; no battery charger.
🎯 Verdict: The best ESP32-S3 for Arduino Nano fans and classrooms that value official support.

5. Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3

ESP32-S3R8 · 8 MB flash + 8 MB PSRAM · LiPo charge management · U.FL antenna · 21 × 17.8 mm
Buy Here →
Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 tiny development board

Take away the camera and microphone from the Sense and you get the plain XIAO ESP32S3, one of the smallest practical ESP32-S3 boards you can buy (about 4.6 stars from 160+ ratings). It keeps the same 8 MB PSRAM and 8 MB flash, adds lithium battery charge management with battery pads on the back, and ships with a U.FL rod antenna that Seeed says can reach 100 m or more in open air. That makes it ideal for wearables, BLE sensor tags, remote controls and robot nodes where size and battery life matter. Because the board has no USB-to-UART bridge, you program it over native USB; if firmware crashes before USB starts, hold BOOT while plugging in. You can always add the Sense camera expansion later.

✅ Pros: Tiny; LiPo charging; 8 MB PSRAM; external antenna included.
❌ Cons: Only 11 GPIO on headers; native USB only; small reset and boot buttons.
🎯 Verdict: The pick for battery-powered and space-limited ESP32-S3 builds.

6. Waveshare ESP32-S3 Mini Development Board (ESP32-S3-Zero)

ESP32-S3FH4R2 · 4 MB flash + 2 MB PSRAM · castellated edges · ceramic antenna · USB-C · no pre-soldered header
Buy Here →
Waveshare ESP32-S3 mini development board ESP32-S3FH4R2

Waveshare’s ESP32-S3 Mini (sold elsewhere as the ESP32-S3-Zero) is a postage-stamp board built on the ESP32-S3FH4R2, a chip with 4 MB of flash and 2 MB of PSRAM inside the package. Its castellated edges let you solder it straight onto your own carrier PCB, which makes it a favorite for small production runs, custom keyboards and LED controllers where you don’t want to design the RF section yourself. It has USB-C, a WS2812 RGB LED and a ceramic antenna, and it holds about 4.4 stars from 80+ ratings. The trade-offs are real: 2 MB of PSRAM is not enough for large displays or camera work, the ceramic antenna has less range than a WROOM PCB antenna, and this version comes without headers. Stock on Amazon was low when we checked.

✅ Pros: Castellated for PCB mounting; tiny; RGB LED; low cost.
❌ Cons: Only 2 MB PSRAM; shorter antenna range; headers not included.
🎯 Verdict: The best ESP32-S3 module-on-a-board for soldering into your own hardware.

🎯 Verdict: The best small ESP32-S3 board with a built-in screen.
📱 BEST MID-SIZE TOUCH UI · ⭐ 4.2/5

9. Waveshare ESP32-S3 3.5 inch Capacitive Touch Display Board

ESP32-S3R8 · 16 MB flash + 8 MB PSRAM · 3.5″ 320 × 480 IPS · 262K colors · capacitive touch · USB-C
Buy Here →
Waveshare ESP32-S3 3.5 inch capacitive touch display development board

A 1.9 inch screen is great for status, but menus and touch controls need more room. Waveshare’s 3.5 inch ESP32-S3 touch board gives you a 320 × 480 IPS panel with capacitive touch on an ESP32-S3R8 with 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM, which is the sweet spot for LVGL thermostats, smart-home wall panels and handheld instruments. At this resolution, partial frame buffers fit comfortably in internal RAM, so UIs stay responsive without the GPIO cost of an RGB panel. Waveshare documents the board on its wiki with ESP-IDF and Arduino demos. Amazon reviews are decent but limited (about 4.0 stars from 40 ratings), and Waveshare sells several similar 3.5 inch variants, so make sure the listing matches the version in the wiki you follow.

✅ Pros: Good-size IPS touch screen; 16 MB + 8 MB; Waveshare wiki and demos.
❌ Cons: Smaller review base; several look-alike variants; no enclosure.
🎯 Verdict: The best middle ground between a tiny status screen and a full 7 inch panel.
🏭 BEST INDUSTRIAL HMI · ⭐ 4.4/5

10. Waveshare ESP32-S3 7 inch Capacitive Touch LCD (ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7)

ESP32-S3 N16R8 · 7″ 800 × 480 RGB LCD · 5-point capacitive touch · CAN · RS485 · I2C · TF slot · battery header
Buy Here →
Waveshare ESP32-S3 7 inch capacitive touch LCD development board

For a real control panel, the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7 is the most capable 7 inch ESP32-S3 board on Amazon. It drives an 800 × 480 RGB LCD with 5-point capacitive touch from an ESP32-S3 with 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM, and, unlike most display boards, it adds CAN, RS485 and I2C headers, a TF card slot and a LiPo battery header. That makes it a credible front end for Modbus RTU equipment, CAN-based machinery, solar inverters or a Home Assistant wall panel. The RGB interface needs PSRAM frame buffers and careful LVGL tuning (double buffering and bounce buffers) to avoid tearing, so it suits developers comfortable with ESP-IDF. Ratings are excellent but from a small sample (about 4.6 stars from 20+ reviews), and Waveshare also makes a second 7 inch listing with a larger review base.

✅ Pros: Large touch screen; CAN and RS485 onboard; 16 MB + 8 MB; battery header.

Buy Here →
Elecrow CrowPanel 7 inch ESP32-S3 HMI touch display 800x480

Elecrow’s CrowPanel 7.0 is the most-reviewed 7 inch ESP32-S3 display on Amazon (350+ ratings) and usually the cheaper way into a big touchscreen. It runs an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N4R8 (4 MB flash, 8 MB PSRAM) behind an 800 × 480 capacitive touch panel, with a TF card slot, UART and I2C ports, a speaker connector and a battery input. Elecrow ships LVGL demos, 16 learning tutorials and support for SquareLine Studio and openHASP, so beginners can get a working UI quickly. There are compromises: the panel is a TN type with narrower viewing angles than IPS, 4 MB of flash gets tight with large font and image assets, and Amazon ratings are mixed (about 3.7 stars), mostly over touch calibration and documentation. Choose it for value; choose the Waveshare above for industrial I/O.

✅ Pros: Large review base; good LVGL and openHASP support; speaker and battery ports.
❌ Cons: TN panel viewing angles; only 4 MB flash; mixed ratings.
🎯 Verdict: The budget-friendly 7 inch ESP32-S3 panel for LVGL beginners and openHASP users.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What do N8R8, N16R8 and N8R2 mean on ESP32-S3 boards?

The number after N is the flash size in MB and the number after R is the PSRAM size in MB. N16R8 means 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM; N8R2 means 8 MB flash and 2 MB PSRAM. The 8 MB PSRAM versions use octal PSRAM, which is faster but reserves GPIO35, GPIO36 and GPIO37. In ESP-IDF, enable PSRAM in menuconfig (Component config, ESP PSRAM) and pick Octal mode for R8 modules, or your board will boot with no external RAM.

Which USB port should I use on a dual USB-C ESP32-S3 board?

Use the UART port (usually labeled COM or UART) for everyday flashing and serial logs, because it keeps working even if your firmware crashes or reconfigures USB. Use the native USB port when you need USB HID, mass storage or the built-in USB Serial/JTAG debugger for breakpoints in VS Code. Both ports can power the board.

Does the ESP32-S3 support Bluetooth Classic?

No. The ESP32-S3 supports Bluetooth 5 LE (including long range and BLE Mesh) but not Bluetooth Classic, so A2DP audio streaming and SPP serial apps need the original ESP32. Our ESP32 Bluetooth Classic tutorial uses the original ESP32 for that reason.

Can an ESP32-S3 really run AI models?

Yes, for small models. The S3’s vector instructions accelerate the neural network math used by Espressif’s ESP-DL library, which powers ESP-WHO face and object detection and ESP-SR wake-word and command recognition. Expect quantized image classifiers, keyword spotting and simple detection at useful frame rates with 8 MB PSRAM. Large language models do not run on the chip; voice assistants use the S3 for wake word and audio and send speech to a cloud model.

Should I buy an ESP32-S3, an original ESP32 or an ESP32-C6?

Choose the S3 for displays, cameras, USB devices, AI and anything that needs lots of RAM. Choose the original ESP32 if you need Bluetooth Classic or want the widest library compatibility on the cheapest boards. Choose the ESP32-C6 for Wi-Fi 6, Thread, Zigbee and Matter devices. For deep-sleep battery projects, all three work; read our ESP32 deep sleep guide to cut current draw.

For most developers, an N16R8 DevKitC-1 style board such as the Hosyond 3-pack is the ESP32-S3 to buy first: maximum memory, both USB paths and the pinout every example assumes. Add the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense or Freenove camera board for vision work, the T-Display-S3 or a Waveshare touch panel for user interfaces, and the Waveshare AI Smart Speaker board for voice. Once your board arrives, start with our ESP-IDF installation guide for Windows and VS Code (or the Linux Ubuntu version), then work through Getting Started with ESP32 using ESP-IDF and the GPIO LED blinking example. Camera owners can jump to our ESP-IDF live streaming web server and photo to SD card tutorials (update the camera pins for your S3 board), and display fans can begin with the OLED with ESP-IDF guide before moving to LVGL. For connected projects, see our ESP-IDF web server and MQTT client tutorials.

💬 Not sure which ESP32-S3 board fits your project? Tell us what you’re building (display, camera, battery sensor or voice) and whether you use ESP-IDF, Arduino or MicroPython in the comments below, and we’ll point you to the right board.
