JST Pitch Coverage Explained
β
Honest Pros and Cons
Almost every ESP32 project ends up with custom wiring. A BME280 needs a four-wire I2C lead, a LiPo needs a JST PH 2.0 pigtail for a LOLIN or Feather board, a GPS module ships with a JST SH or GH socket and a relay board wants a tidy 2.54 mm Dupont harness. Off-the-shelf jumpers are never the right length, and a loose one is the classic cause of random brownouts, I2C bus errors and boards that reset only when you touch the desk.
A proper open-barrel crimper fixes that. It rolls the terminal wings into the strands for a gas-tight joint and clamps the insulation for strain relief, so the lead survives vibration and handling far better than a soldered pin. The catch is that one die cannot do everything: the contacts used on ESP32 boards range from tiny JST SH 1.0 mm pins to large VH 3.96 mm power terminals. This guide shows which tool covers which connector.
π‘ Before you buy: Check which connectors you actually use first. Dupont 2.54 mm and JST XH are easy for almost any tool here, but JST PH 2.0 mm (most LiPo battery plugs on ESP32 boards) and JST SH 1.0 mm (Qwiic and STEMMA QT sensor cables) need finer nests. Plan on two tools if you work from SH up to VH, budget for genuine terminals (cheap soft pins crimp badly in any tool) and expect to waste a handful of pins while you learn. That is normal, not a faulty crimper.

π What Matters in a Dupont and JST Crimper
π
Die Width, Not Brand Lists
Match the nest width to your terminal barrel. A nest that is too wide folds JST PH wings flat instead of rolling them into the strands.
π
A True B-Crimp
A good open-barrel die curls both conductor wings inward into a B shape. Flat or overlapped wings mean the wrong tool or the wrong nest.
π
Ratchet or Precision
A ratchet will not release until the crimp is complete, which helps beginners. Precision pliers like the PA-09 let you feel the crimp on fragile micro pins.
π§·
Insulation Crimp
Terminals have a second set of wings that grip the jacket. That strain relief is what stops a sensor lead snapping where it leaves the pin.
π―
Jaw Alignment
Hold the closed jaws to a light. Any offset between punch and anvil gives lopsided crimps forever, which is what the premium tools fix.

π₯ BEST OVERALL
1. ENGINEER PA-09 Micro Connector Crimping Pliers
β 4.8/5 Β· Our Rating Β· The Precision Benchmark
Buy on Amazon β

The ENGINEER PA-09 is the crimper most electronics people end up with once they are tired of bad Dupont pins. Its nests cover roughly 1.0 mm to 1.9 mm contacts and AWG 32 to 20 wire, which is exactly the band of JST SH, ZH, PH and XH contacts, Dupont 2.54 mm pins and D-Sub contacts found around ESP32 boards. It has no ratchet. Instead the jaws are ground accurately enough that you feel the terminal seat, which is what lets you crimp a thin 30 AWG Qwiic lead without shearing it. The handles have an oil-resistant grip, and the punch and anvil line up properly, so crimps come out clean and symmetrical.
β
Pros- Excellent jaw alignment
- Reaches 32 AWG micro contacts
- Covers JST SH through XH plus Dupont
- Built to last for years
β Cons- Premium price
- No ratchet, so technique matters
- Not for large VH power pins
π― Verdict: The best single crimper for ESP32 sensor leads, battery pigtails and Dupont jumpers.

2. iCrimp SN-28B Dupont Crimping Tool
β 4.5/5 Β· Our Rating Β· The Maker Default
Buy on Amazon β

The SN-28B is the crimper in a huge number of maker toolboxes, and the iCrimp branded version is the one worth buying over anonymous clones. Its nests are sized for Dupont 2.54 mm, JST XH 2.5 mm and VH 3.96 mm terminals across AWG 28 to 18, and the ratchet will not open until the crimp is complete. That single feature is why beginners get repeatable results with it. For custom-length Dupont jumpers between an ESP32 DevKit and breadboard modules, relay boards and display headers, it does the job for a fraction of the price of the Japanese tools. Just don’t expect it to handle JST PH 2.0 mm or anything finer.
β
Pros- Ratchet forces a complete crimp
- Great for 2.54 mm Dupont work
- Very affordable entry point
- Adjustable crimp pressure
β Cons- Too coarse for JST PH, ZH or SH
- Fit and finish is basic
π― Verdict: The best first crimper if you mostly build Dupont jumpers and XH leads.

π§ Detailed Reviews: Ratchets, Micro Pins and Power
π BEST JST ALL-ROUNDER Β· β 4.6/53. iCrimp SN-2549 Ratcheting Crimping Tool
AWG 28-18 Β· 0.08-1.0 mmΒ² Β· ratcheting Β· JST ZH 1.5 / PH 2.0 / XH 2.5 / VH 3.96 / JWPS 4.0 Β· Dupont 2.54
Buy Here β

If your bench is full of JST connectors rather than plain Dupont, the SN-2549 is the smarter budget ratchet. It adds finer nests that reach JST ZH 1.5 mm and PH 2.0 mm, the pitches you meet on LiPo connectors, small sensor boards and GPS modules, while still handling XH, VH 3.96 mm and Dupont 2.54 mm at the coarse end. One tool covers most of a hobby ESP32 bench. The finest nest still cannot form JST SH 1.0 mm contacts, though.
β
Pros: Widest JST coverage in one ratchet; reaches ZH and PH; budget friendly.
β Cons: Not fine enough for JST SH; ratchet can feel firm on 28 AWG.
π― Verdict: The one budget ratchet to buy if you crimp JST PH and ZH more than Dupont.
π¬ BEST FOR MICRO PINS Β· β 4.5/54. iCrimp IWS-3220M Micro Connector Pin Crimping Tool
AWG 32-20 Β· 0.03-0.52 mmΒ² Β· ratcheting Β· D-Sub and open barrel pins for Molex, JST and JAE
Buy Here β

When the terminals get genuinely tiny, the IWS-3220M is the ratchet that can still reach them. Its range runs from 0.03 to 0.52 mmΒ² (AWG 32 to 20), the territory of JST SH 1.0 mm, small Molex and JAE pins and D-Sub contacts. That makes it the tool for Qwiic and STEMMA QT style sensor cables, camera and display pigtails and the micro connectors on compact ESP32-S3 and C3 boards. Loading a terminal at this scale takes a steady hand and often tweezers.
β
Pros: Ratchet repeatability down to 32 AWG; great for JST SH and D-Sub.
β Cons: Fiddly to load; no use above 20 AWG.
π― Verdict: The right second crimper once a project drags you below 24 AWG.
π―π΅ BEST PA-09 PARTNER Β· β 4.7/55. ENGINEER PA-20 Universal Connector Crimping Pliers
AWG 28-18 Β· precision non-ratcheting Β· 175 mm Β· made in Japan Β· larger open barrel contacts
Buy Here β

The PA-20 is the bigger sibling of the PA-09, with the same Japanese grinding and the same feel but nests sized for larger open-barrel contacts and AWG 28 to 18 wire. It picks up where the PA-09 stops, which suits thicker power leads, larger JST and Molex style terminals and heavier Dupont-style pins. Own both and you can crimp everything from thin signal wire to the 18 AWG leads that feed a WLED strip or motor driver with clean, repeatable results.
β
Pros: Superb jaw accuracy; ideal partner to the PA-09; handles thicker wire.
β Cons: Premium price; overlaps a budget ratchet for basic 2.54 mm work.
π― Verdict: Buy it as the second half of a PA-09 pairing for a complete precision kit.
π BEST FOR LIPO LEADS Β· β 4.4/56. iCrimp SN-01BM JST Crimping Tool
AWG 28-20 Β· ratcheting Β· JST PH 2.0 and XH 2.54 Β· Dupont pins
Buy Here β

The SN-01BM narrows the range to AWG 28 to 20 and shapes its nests for JST PH 2.0 mm and XH contacts plus Dupont pins. Giving up the big 3.96 mm nest buys noticeably better results on small terminals, which is the right trade if you mostly make LiPo battery pigtails for ESP32 boards with a PH 2.0 socket, servo leads or short sensor harnesses. It is not in the ENGINEER class for alignment, but it is a cheap way to get decent PH crimps.
β
Pros: Nests sized for JST PH 2.0; ratchet consistency; low cost.
β Cons: No coverage above 20 AWG; basic build quality.
π― Verdict: The cheapest route to clean JST PH battery leads.
β‘ BEST FOR POWER PINS Β· β 4.4/57. iCrimp SN-48B Pin Crimping Tool
AWG 26-16 Β· 0.14-1.5 mmΒ² Β· ratcheting Β· 3.96 / 4.8 / 5.08 / 6.3 mm open barrel terminals
Buy Here β

Once a harness carries real current, the terminals get bigger and small crimpers run out of nest. The SN-48B handles 3.96, 4.8, 5.08 and 6.3 mm open-barrel terminals across AWG 26 to 16, covering JST VH and SM contacts, larger Molex pins and small spade terminals. That suits the power side of ESP32 builds: LED strip feeds, 12 V pump and solenoid leads and power supply wiring. Pair it with a small-terminal crimper rather than using it for signal pins.
β
Pros: Reaches big pitches the others can’t; handles JST VH and SM; affordable.
β Cons: Useless for Dupont or JST PH signal pins.
π― Verdict: The power-side companion to a small-terminal crimper.
β Also Worth Considering
β BEST MID-SIZE PRECISION Β· β 4.6/5
8. ENGINEER PA-21 Universal Connector Crimping Pliers
Another 175 mm, made in Japan ENGINEER plier, the PA-21 targets 1.6 to 2.5 mm contact sizes. It sits between the PA-09 and the larger tools, which makes it a good precision choice if most of your work is Dupont, XH and similar mid-size open-barrel terminals rather than tiny SH pins.

9. Hozan P-707 Open Barrel Crimping Tool
The Hozan P-707 is a Japanese open-barrel crimper with 15 large and small dies in one tool and a toggle action. It suits a shared lab or small production bench where many terminal sizes come through, but it is bigger and costs more than a hobbyist needs for a few ESP32 harnesses.

β Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just solder Dupont and JST pins instead of crimping?
You can, but it is not a good idea. Solder wicks up the strands and makes the wire stiff right where it leaves the terminal, so it tends to crack after vibration or repeated handling. Open-barrel terminals are designed for a crimp, with the conductor wings gripping the strands and the insulation wings providing strain relief.
Which JST connector does my ESP32 board use?
It varies. Many ESP32 boards with a battery input, such as Feather and LOLIN style boards, use a JST PH 2.0 mm socket, while Qwiic and STEMMA QT sensor ports use JST SH 1.0 mm. Larger battery packs and chargers often use JST XH 2.5 mm. Check the board’s documentation or measure the pin pitch with calipers before buying terminals.
Why do my Dupont crimps pull out of the wire?
Usually one of four things: too much insulation stripped (aim for about 2 mm so the rear wings grip the jacket), a nest that is too large, crimping both wing pairs in one nest when they need separate positions, or wire too thin for the terminal. Folding a thin stripped end back on itself before crimping helps.
Ratcheting or non-ratcheting crimper?
If you are new to crimping, buy a ratchet such as the SN-28B or SN-2549. It will not open until the crimp is complete, which removes the most common under-crimp mistake. Precision non-ratcheting pliers like the PA-09 suit experienced users who want to feel the crimp on delicate micro contacts.
Can one crimper cover JST SH all the way to VH?
Not properly. SH contacts are around 1 mm wide and VH contacts are close to 4 mm, and no single set of dies forms a good crimp across that whole range. Plan on a small-terminal tool (PA-09, SN-2549, SN-01BM or IWS-3220M) plus a larger one (PA-20 or SN-48B) if you need both ends.
