Comparing ESP32 chips? Our
ESP32 chip comparison hub compares every ESP32 chip side by side and links to all of our ESP32 buying guides.
Every Zigbee network needs a coordinator, and every Thread network needs a border router to connect it to your home network. USB sticks plugged into your server work, but they suffer from USB 3.0 interference and they tie the radio to wherever the server sits. A network coordinator solves both: you place it centrally in the house, connect it by Ethernet with PoE, and Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT talks to it over the network.
Most of these devices use the same architecture, and it’s an ESP32 story: an ESP32 handles Ethernet, Wi-Fi, the web interface and firmware updates, while a dedicated 802.15.4 radio chip (from Texas Instruments, Silicon Labs or Espressif’s own ESP32-H2) runs the Zigbee or Thread stack. This guide covers 9 options, from SMLIGHT’s popular SLZB adapters to ESP32-S3 + ESP32-H2 Thread border router kits and DIY radios.
π‘ Choosing the radio chip: Texas Instruments CC2652P / P7 / P10 radios are the long-standing favourite for Zigbee2MQTT and support Zigbee only. Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 / MG24 radios run Zigbee or Thread firmware, and they’re the platform Home Assistant’s own Connect hardware uses. If you want Zigbee and Thread at the same time, choose a dual-radio model (SLZB-MR series) rather than relying on single-radio multiprotocol firmware. For Thread built entirely on Espressif chips, the ESP32-S3 + ESP32-H2 border router design is the reference.

Buy on Amazon β

If you’re building a modern smart home, you probably want both Zigbee for the huge range of affordable sensors and Thread for Matter devices. The SLZB-MR1 (about 4.8 stars from 16 ratings) puts two separate radios in one PoE box, a TI CC2652P7 and a Silicon Labs EFR32MG21, coordinated by an ESP32, so it can run a Zigbee network and act as a Thread radio for a border router at the same time. That’s more reliable than single-radio multiprotocol firmware, which Home Assistant no longer recommends. SMLIGHT also notes it can run ESPHome firmware for DIY users. It ships pre-flashed and ready to use.
β
Pros- True dual radio
- Zigbee + Thread at once
- PoE, compact
- ESPHome-capable core
β Cons- Few Amazon reviews yet
- More complex setup
- Costs more than 06 series
π― Verdict: The one box for Zigbee and Thread together.

Buy Here β

The original SLZB-06 is the most reviewed coordinator in this guide (about 4.2 stars from 187 ratings). It pairs the ESP32 core with a Texas Instruments CC2652P radio, long a favourite of the Zigbee2MQTT community. On TI-based models, SMLIGHT also offers a Zigbee hub mode to control devices directly from the built-in web interface. It’s Zigbee only, so pick it if you’re building a Zigbee2MQTT network and don’t need Thread on this device.
β
Pros: Proven CC2652P; most reviews; hub mode.
β Cons: Zigbee only; lower rating than newer models.
π― Verdict: The proven TI-based coordinator for Zigbee2MQTT.
π NEWEST SILICON LABS RADIO Β· β 4.7/54. SMLIGHT SLZB-06MG24U
ESP32 + EFR32MG24 Β· Zigbee or Thread Β· Ethernet/PoE, USB and Wi-Fi
Buy Here β

The SLZB-06MG24 (about 4.7 stars from 10 ratings) is the same ESP32 + PoE design with Silicon Labs’ newer EFR32MG24 radio, which has more memory and processing headroom than the MG21 for large networks and future firmware. Like the 06M, it runs Zigbee or Thread firmware. If you’re buying a single-radio Silicon Labs coordinator today, this is the more future-proof choice; the 06M simply has the longer track record.
β
Pros: Newer MG24 radio; Zigbee or Thread; PoE.
β Cons: Few reviews; single radio.
π― Verdict: The future-proof single-radio SLZB pick.
πΆ BEST LONG RANGE Β· β 4.6/55. SMLIGHT SLZB-06P7U
ESP32 + TI CC2652P7 Β· +20 dB amplifier Β· +5 dB antenna Β· coordinator, router or extender
Buy Here β

For large homes, outbuildings or thick walls, the SLZB-06P7 (about 4.6 stars from 33 ratings) uses TI’s larger-memory CC2652P7 with a +20 dB amplifier and a +5 dB antenna for wider coverage, according to the listing. It can act as a coordinator, router or signal extender, so a second unit can extend an existing Zigbee mesh over Ethernet. Range helps, but a healthy Zigbee network still depends most on having enough mains-powered router devices spread around the house.
β
Pros: Amplified range; P7 memory; router mode.
β Cons: Zigbee only; range isn’t a mesh substitute.
π― Verdict: The long-range coordinator for big or difficult buildings.
π FLAGSHIP DUAL RADIO Β· β 4.9/56. SMLIGHT SLZB-MR3U
ESP32 + TI CC2652P10 + Silicon Labs EFR32MG24 Β· dual antenna Β· Zigbee + Thread

β Frequently Asked Questions
Why use a network coordinator instead of a USB stick?
USB coordinators are often affected by interference from USB 3.0 ports and must sit next to your server. A network coordinator can be placed centrally in the house, powered by PoE, and reached over Ethernet, which usually means a stronger and more stable mesh.
What does the ESP32 actually do in these devices?
The ESP32 is the network and management processor: it runs Ethernet and Wi-Fi, the web interface, firmware updates and the TCP bridge to the radio. The Zigbee or Thread stack itself runs on the separate radio chip, such as the CC2652P or EFR32MG21.
Can one radio run Zigbee and Thread at the same time?
Single-radio multiprotocol firmware exists, but Home Assistant no longer recommends it because of reliability issues. Use one radio per protocol, either two adapters or a dual-radio device like the SLZB-MR1 or MR3.
Do I need a Thread border router for Matter?
Only for Matter-over-Thread devices. Matter over Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices don’t need one. Many smart speakers and hubs already include a border router, and Home Assistant can run OpenThread Border Router with a Thread radio like those above. Learn more in our Thread protocol guide and Matter overview.
How do I power a PoE coordinator?
Use a PoE-capable network switch or a single-port PoE injector, so one Ethernet cable provides both data and power. These devices also accept USB-C power if you don’t have PoE. Our ESP32 Ethernet and PoE guide covers more PoE hardware.
π Final Verdict: Best ESP32-Based Coordinators
Our top recommendations:
For most Home Assistant users, an SLZB-06M on PoE is the simplest upgrade from a USB stick, and the SLZB-MR1 is the answer if you want Zigbee and Thread from one box. Zigbee2MQTT fans on TI radios should look at the SLZB-06 or the long-range 06P7. If you’d rather understand and build the Thread side yourself, the M5Stack K149 kit and Gateway H2 unit follow Espressif’s ESP32-S3 + ESP32-H2 border router design. Then build your own devices with XIAO ESP32C6 boards and our OpenThread Border Router tutorial, and compare chips in our ESP32 chip comparison hub.
