🔥 Best Hot Air Rework Stations for ESP32 Projects
Swap a dead ESP32 module, replace a torn USB-C port or rescue a cooked regulator. Here are 9 hot air and combo rework stations, from compact add-on guns to 3-in-1 benches and 1000 W powerhouses.
✅ 9 Stations Compared

✅ ESP32 Rework Tips
✅ Honest Pros & Cons
A soldering iron handles through-hole parts and header pins, but modern ESP32 boards are almost entirely surface mount. The USB-C connector, the AMS1117 or ME6211 regulator, the CH340 or CP2102 USB bridge and the ESP32 module itself all have pads you can’t reach with an iron tip at once. A hot air rework station melts every joint on a part at the same time, so you can lift it cleanly, reseat it or drop in a replacement without tearing pads.
This guide compares 9 stations that suit an ESP32 bench: 2-in-1 combos that pair hot air with an iron, dedicated hot air units for anyone who already owns a good iron, a 3-in-1 with a built-in power supply and a 1000 W gun for big ground planes. Each review notes the temperature control, airflow and accessories that matter for real rework.
💡 Before you buy: Hot air is a skill tool, not a magic wand. You will also need flux, fine tweezers and some practice on a scrap board. If you already own a temperature-controlled iron, a standalone hot air unit is better value than a combo. If you’re starting from scratch, a 2-in-1 saves desk space and money. And keep plastic headers, buttons and connectors in mind: hot air will soften them if you linger.

🔍 What Matters in a Hot Air Station
🌡️
Stable Temperature
PID control keeps the air at the set point as airflow changes, so you don’t overshoot and lift pads.
💨
Airflow Range
High airflow heats an ESP32 module’s big ground pad; low airflow keeps 0402 capacitors from blowing away.
🔀
Combo or Standalone
A 2-in-1 adds an iron in the same box; a standalone unit pairs with the iron you already trust.
🧩
Nozzles
Small round nozzles focus heat on one part; wider ones spread it over a module or connector.
🛡️
Safety and Standby
Auto cool-down in the holder, sleep timers and air-failure cut-offs protect the gun and your bench.

Hot air + 70 W iron + vacuum pickup pen + smoke absorber on one base
Buy Here →

The long-running Aoyue 968A+ combines hot air, a 70 W soldering iron, a vacuum pickup pen and a smoke absorber in one station. The vacuum pen is the standout for ESP32 work: it lifts a QFN chip or a whole module straight up the moment the solder melts, and places a new one without tweezers nudging it out of line. The built-in fume fan pulls flux smoke away from your face.
✅ Pros: Vacuum pickup and fume extraction built in.
❌ Cons: Older design; sparse listing details.
🎯 Verdict: For repair benches that want every rework tool on one base.
🎯 BEST FOR HEAVY REWORK · ⭐ 4.4/59. ATTEN ST-862D 1000 W Hot Air Station
1000 W · 100 to 480°C · 120 L/min · ±1°C stability · 3 presets · silicone gun cable
Buy Here →

ATTEN is a respected test and soldering brand, and the ST-862D is a serious gun: 1000 W, 100 to 480°C, 120 L/min of airflow and ±1°C temperature stability, with a menu interface and three quick presets for temperature and air. That reserve of power matters on four-layer boards with heavy copper, where a 700 W gun struggles to bring an ESP32 module’s ground pad up to temperature. The silicone gun cable stays flexible and won’t melt if it touches the iron.
✅ Pros: Lots of heat; tight stability; silicone cable.
❌ Cons: Fewer reviews; sold by a third-party store.
🎯 Verdict: The pick for lead-free work, thick copper and whole-module swaps.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove an ESP32-WROOM module with hot air?
Yes. Add flux to the castellated pads, use a wide nozzle and fairly high airflow, and keep the gun moving around the whole module so the large ground pad underneath melts along with the edges. When every pad is liquid, the module lifts with tweezers or a vacuum pen. Don’t pry early: that tears pads. Preheating thick boards from below makes it much easier.
What temperature should I use?
A common starting point is around 300 to 350°C for leaded solder and 350 to 400°C for lead-free, then adjust. Stations differ in how their displayed temperature relates to the air at the board, so practice on a scrap board first. If a big part is slow to melt, add airflow or a wider nozzle before turning the heat up.
Do I need flux for hot air rework?
Always. Flux helps heat transfer, stops the solder oxidising while it’s hot and lets a new part self-align on its pads. A no-clean gel or paste flux in a syringe is the easiest to control.
Why do small parts blow away?
The airflow is too high or the nozzle is too close. Lower the air, hold the gun a little further away and use a smaller nozzle. Flux also helps hold tiny parts in place.
How do I protect plastic connectors and headers nearby?
Shield them with Kapton tape or a strip of aluminium foil, use the smallest nozzle that fits the part and keep heating time short. Remove plastic headers or JST sockets first when the job allows.
