Wi-Fi + BLE 5 on RISC-V
β
Honest Pros & Cons
The ESP32-C3 is Espressif’s budget workhorse and the modern replacement for the ESP8266. It runs a single-core 32-bit RISC-V CPU at 160 MHz with 400 KB of SRAM, and adds 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (LE), including long-range Coded PHY. It also brings a built-in USB Serial/JTAG controller, so many boards need no USB-UART chip, plus Secure Boot, flash encryption and a hardware digital-signature peripheral.
That combination, at a very low price, has made the C3 the go-to chip for ESPHome nodes, Home Assistant sensors, WLED controllers, ESP-NOW remotes and tiny BLE devices. It’s also the chip on the hugely popular SuperMini and the Seeed XIAO ESP32C3. This guide compares 12 ESP32-C3 boards, from bare minis to boards with OLEDs, round touchscreens and a mains relay.
π‘ Before you buy: The ESP32-C3 has no PSRAM support, so it’s best for sensors, switches, LED controllers and small displays rather than cameras or big touch UIs. It’s single-core and has about 22 GPIOs, fewer than the original ESP32. It’s 2.4 GHz only and has no Thread or Zigbee radio; for Matter-over-Thread, look at the ESP32-C6. Finally, ultra-cheap SuperMini boards are known for some quirks: on certain batches Wi-Fi is weak until you lower the transmit power in code, and you sometimes need to hold BOOT while pressing RESET to upload.

π What to Look for in an ESP32-C3 Board
π‘
Antenna Design
This is the biggest quality difference between C3 boards. Module-based boards (MINI-1, ESP-C3-12F) and the XIAO with its external U.FL antenna connect reliably. Tiny ceramic-antenna SuperMinis are cheaper but more variable from batch to batch.
π
USB Wiring
Most C3 boards wire USB-C straight to the chip’s USB Serial/JTAG. That’s convenient, but a crashed sketch can hide the port. DevKitM-1 boards with a second USB-UART port are easier to recover and debug.
π
Battery Support
BLE beacons, remotes and sensors often run from a LiPo. Boards with built-in charging (XIAO, Lonely Binary’s shields) save you an extra module and wiring.
π₯οΈ
Built-in Display
Without PSRAM, the C3 is happiest with small screens: 0.42″ OLEDs, 0.71″ round LCDs, a 1.28″ round touch display or a 1.47″ bar LCD. For larger touch UIs, choose an ESP32-S3 instead.
π
Form Factor
SuperMinis and XIAOs hide inside light switches and enclosures; DevKitM-1 boards suit breadboards; castellated Waveshare minis solder straight onto your own PCB.

160 MHz
RISC-V SINGLE CORE
Buy on Amazon β

The XIAO ESP32C3 is the ESP32-C3 board that just works, which is why it has more than 380 ratings at about 4.7 stars. It packs the C3’s 160 MHz RISC-V core, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (LE) into a 21 Γ 17.5 mm board, and fixes the two things that let cheaper C3 boards down: it ships with an external U.FL antenna, which Seeed says reaches over 100 m line of sight, and it has a proper LiPo charging circuit for battery projects. It supports Arduino, MicroPython, CircuitPython, ESP-IDF, ESPHome, WLED and Zephyr, and fits Seeed’s large range of XIAO expansion boards. If you want one C3 board for a sensor, a BLE remote or an ESPHome node, buy this one.

BEST BUDGET
Teyleten Robot ESP32-C3 SuperMini (3-Pack)
β 4.3/5 Β· The Cheapest Wi-Fi + BLE Board Worth Buying
Buy on Amazon β

The ESP32-C3 SuperMini is the cheapest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE board you can buy, and Teyleten’s 3-pack is the most-reviewed listing (about 4.2 stars from 100 ratings). Each tiny board has the C3 with 4 MB of flash, a ceramic antenna, BOOT and RESET buttons and USB-C wired to the chip’s built-in USB serial. They’re perfect for ESPHome sensors, ESP-NOW remotes, WLED strips and anywhere you need many cheap nodes. Two honest caveats: the listing itself explains you may need the BOOT + RESET sequence to upload, and some SuperMini batches have weak Wi-Fi that improves when you lower the transmit power in code (see our FAQ). For the price, they’re still excellent.
β
Pros- Lowest cost per board

β Frequently Asked Questions
My ESP32-C3 SuperMini won’t connect to Wi-Fi. What can I do?
This is a widely reported quirk of some SuperMini batches, usually blamed on antenna layout. Many users fix it by lowering the transmit power right after starting Wi-Fi, for example WiFi.setTxPower(WIFI_POWER_8_5dBm); in Arduino, or the equivalent esp_wifi_set_max_tx_power() call in ESP-IDF. Moving the board away from metal and the router also helps. If reliability matters, use a XIAO or a module-based board.
How do I upload code when the C3’s USB port disappears?
Boards that use the C3’s built-in USB serial lose their port if your firmware crashes or enters deep sleep. Hold BOOT, press and release RESET, then release BOOT. The port comes back in download mode and you can upload. In Arduino, enable “USB CDC On Boot” to see serial output on the same port.
ESP32-C3 or ESP32-C6: which should I buy?
Both are single-core RISC-V chips with Wi-Fi and BLE 5. The C6 adds Wi-Fi 6 and an 802.15.4 radio for Thread and Zigbee, which makes it the better choice for Matter devices. The C3 is cheaper, more mature and has a larger choice of tiny boards, so it’s still great for ESPHome, WLED, ESP-NOW and BLE projects. See our ESP32-C6 buying guide.
Is the ESP32-C3 a good ESP8266 replacement?
Yes. It costs about the same, adds Bluetooth LE, has more RAM, better security (Secure Boot and flash encryption) and a more modern toolchain, and Espressif designed it as the ESP8266’s successor. Most ESP8266 projects port across with pin changes.
