Leaded vs Lead-Free Explained
β
Honest Pros & Cons
Most bad joints on ESP32 projects are not the iron’s fault. They come from old or cheap solder, no extra flux on a fine-pitch pin, an oxidised tip that won’t wet, or a bridge you can’t remove without lifting a pad. Soldering header pins onto a DevKit, attaching a USB-C breakout, fixing a bridged ESP32-S3 module pad or swapping a sensor all go much faster with the right consumables on the bench.
This guide compares 9 accessories that cover the whole job: solder wire and flux to make the joint, desoldering wick and a solder sucker to undo it, tip tinner and a tip cleaner to keep the iron working, a fume extractor for your lungs and a silicone mat to protect the desk.
π‘ Before you buy: Decide between leaded and lead-free solder first. 63/37 leaded solder melts at a lower temperature and flows far more easily, which is why most hobbyists prefer it, but you must wash your hands afterwards and keep it away from food. Lead-free solder needs a hotter tip and more flux. Whichever you choose, buy a no-clean flux as well: extra flux fixes more bad joints than any other accessory.

π What Matters in Soldering Accessories
π§²
Solder Alloy and Diameter
63/37 is eutectic: it goes from liquid to solid in one step, so joints don’t go grainy. A 0.031 in (0.8 mm) wire suits headers and most through-hole work.
π§ͺ
No-Clean Flux
Flux removes oxide so solder wets the pad. No-clean types leave a safe, non-conductive residue, so you don’t have to wash the board.
π§΅
Wick Width
Match braid width to the pad. Narrow braid for SMD pins and module castellations, wider braid for through-hole pads and connectors.
β¨
Tip Care
A dry brass cleaner keeps the tip hotter than a wet sponge, and tinner rescues a tip that has turned black and stopped wetting.
π¬οΈ
Fume Control
Flux smoke irritates eyes and lungs. A carbon-filter extractor beside the work pulls it away from your face.

π₯ BEST SOLDER WIRE
Kester 44 Rosin Core Solder 63/37, 0.031 in
β 4.8/5 Β· Our Rating Β· The Bench Classic
Buy on Amazon β

Swap a no-name spool for Kester 44 and most people notice the difference on the first joint. This is the Sn63Pb37 eutectic alloy, which melts at 183Β°C and solidifies in one step, so joints come out bright and smooth instead of grainy. The 0.031 in (0.8 mm) wire is the right size for ESP32 header pins, screw terminals and through-hole parts, and the activated rosin core (classified ROM1 under J-STD-004, about 3.3% flux) wets quickly even on slightly tarnished pads. A 1 lb spool lasts a hobbyist years. It is leaded, so solder with ventilation and wash your hands afterwards.
β
Pros- Flows and wets very easily
- Low 183Β°C melting point
- Ideal size for headers
- Lasts for years
β Cons- Contains lead
- Rosin residue can be cleaned off for looks
- Too thick for tiny SMD parts
π― Verdict: The easiest solder to get good joints with. Make sure the listing says 24-6337-0027.

𧡠BEST DESOLDERING WICK
Chemtronics Soder-Wick Rosin 80-2-5
β 4.8/5 Β· Our Rating Β· Fixes Bridges Fast
Buy on Amazon β

Cheap braid often just sits on the joint and gets hot. Soder-Wick is the brand most repair techs reach for because it pulls solder up almost instantly. The #2 (yellow) size is the one Chemtronics recommends for small pads and SMD, which makes it ideal for clearing a bridge between two ESP32 module pins, cleaning castellated pads before you fit a new module or tidying excess solder off a QFN footprint. The braid is coated in high-purity Type R rosin flux and comes on an ESD-safe bobbin that keeps the unused end clean. Add a touch of extra flux and it works even better.
β
Pros- Very fast wicking
- Right width for SMD pins
- Clean, mild rosin flux
- ESD-safe bobbin
β Cons- Only 5 ft per bobbin
- Too narrow for big connectors
π― Verdict: The wick to keep on the bench for solder bridges and module rework.

π¨ BEST SOLDER SUCKER Β· β 4.7/53. Engineer SS-02 Solder Sucker
Heat-resistant silicone nozzle Β· compact aluminium body Β· one-hand use Β· made in Japan
Buy Here β

For through-hole parts, a pump clears a hole faster than braid. The SS-02 is different from the usual plastic plunger pumps: its tip is a flexible, heat-resistant silicone tube that you press right against the iron and pad, so it seals well and pulls the solder out in one go. The small aluminium body works one-handed, which makes it great for pulling header pins off an ESP32 board, removing a relay or freeing a mis-soldered USB connector. The silicone tube wears with use, so it’s worth having a spare.
β
Pros: Excellent seal; strong suction; compact; one-handed.
β Cons: Silicone tube is a wear part; not for SMD.
π― Verdict: The best manual pump for clearing through-hole joints.
π¬οΈ BEST FUME EXTRACTOR Β· β 4.6/54. Hakko FA-400 Benchtop Smoke Absorber
Activated carbon filter Β· ESD-safe housing Β· stands upright or tilted Β· compact footprint
Buy Here β

Rosin smoke rises straight into your face when you lean over a small board. The Hakko FA-400 sits beside the work and draws that smoke through an activated carbon filter. It’s a small, quiet fan unit with an ESD-safe static-dissipative housing, and it can stand upright or tilt to aim at the joint. Filters are cheap and easy to swap. It’s a bench fan with a filter, not a ducted lab system, so keep it within a few inches of the iron for best results.
β
Pros: Trusted brand; ESD-safe; easy filter swaps; compact.
β Cons: Must sit close to work; carbon filter needs replacing.
π― Verdict: The simplest way to keep flux smoke out of your face.
β¨ BEST TIP REVIVAL Β· β 4.7/55. Thermaltronics TMT-TC-2 Tip Tinner
20 g tin tablet Β· lead-free Β· no-clean compatible Β· self-adhesive base Β· RoHS
Buy Here β

When a tip turns black and solder balls up instead of flowing, it’s oxidised. Before you throw it away, dip it in tip tinner. The TMT-TC-2 is a compressed tablet of pure tin with an ammonium phosphate formula in a 20 g metal tin: touch the hot tip to it, wipe on brass and the tip usually wets again. It’s lead-free, works with no-clean processes, and a self-adhesive pad on the base stops it sliding around the bench. It works with any brand of iron, including TS101, Pinecil and Hakko tips.
β
Pros: Revives dead tips; lead-free; lasts a long time.
β Cons: Smokes when used; not for daily cleaning.
π― Verdict: A small tin that saves you from buying replacement tips.
π§ͺ BEST ALL-ROUND FLUX Β· β 4.6/56. MG Chemicals 8341 No-Clean Flux Paste (10 mL)
10 mL syringe with plunger and tip Β· J-STD-004B ROL1 Β· leaded and lead-free Β· clear, non-conductive residue
Buy Here β

Flux paste in a syringe is the most useful bottle-sized fix on a bench. MG Chemicals’ 8341 is a no-clean paste that meets J-STD-004B ROL1, works with both leaded and lead-free alloys and leaves a clear, non-conductive, non-tacky residue, so most boards can be left as they are. Put a dab on an ESP32-S3 module’s pads before drag soldering, on a bridged USB-C connector or under braid when desoldering. The 10 mL syringe comes with a plunger and dispensing tip for precise dots.
β
Pros: Precise syringe; no-clean; works with any alloy.
β Cons: Less tacky than Chip Quik for holding parts.
π― Verdict: A dependable everyday flux that leaves boards looking clean.
β Also Worth Considering
π― BEST FLUX FOR SMD REWORK Β· β 4.8/5
7. Chip Quik SMD291 Tack Flux (10 cc)
The flux many rework techs swear by. SMD291 is a thick, tacky no-clean flux in a 10 cc syringe with plunger and tip. Its stickiness holds small parts in place while you solder, and it stays active long enough for hot air work and drag soldering fine-pitch pins. Pair it with our hot air rework station picks when replacing ESP32 modules.

8. Hakko 599B Wire Tip Cleaner
A wet sponge chills the tip every time you wipe it. The 599B uses coiled brass wire instead, needs no water, and has a dome-shaped holder that cuts down on solder splash. Hakko adds flux to the wire to slow tip oxidation, and it’s especially good for lead-free solder. Replacement wire is sold separately.

β Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use leaded or lead-free solder for ESP32 projects?
For hobby work, 63/37 leaded solder is easier to use and forgives a cooler iron. Lead-free (such as SAC305) is required for products sold in many regions and needs a hotter tip and more flux. Both work fine on ESP32 boards; don’t mix them on the same joint.
If my solder has a flux core, why buy extra flux?
The core flux burns off within a second or two. Reworking a joint, drag soldering module pins or desoldering with braid all need fresh flux, which is why a syringe of no-clean flux fixes so many problems.
Do I need to clean no-clean flux off the board?
Usually not: the residue is designed to be non-conductive and non-corrosive. Clean it with isopropyl alcohol if heavy residue looks messy, sits near RF antenna areas or will be under a conformal coating.
Wick or solder sucker: which do I need?
Both if you can. A sucker clears through-hole joints quickly; wick is better for SMD pads, bridges and the last thin film of solder a pump leaves behind.
Is a fume extractor necessary for occasional soldering?
For a few joints, an open window and a small fan pulling smoke away may be enough. If you solder often or for long sessions, a carbon-filter extractor beside the work is a worthwhile upgrade.
