Comparing ESP32 chips? Our
ESP32 chip comparison hub compares every ESP32 chip side by side and links to all of our ESP32 buying guides.
WLED is free, open-source firmware that turns an ESP32 into a powerful controller for addressable LED strips, where every LED can show its own colour. You get over a hundred effects, a phone app and web UI, schedules and presets, music-reactive modes, and native Home Assistant, Alexa and Google integration, all without a cloud account. It’s the most popular way to light up a TV backlight, a staircase, a gaming desk, a house roofline or a holiday display.
This guide covers 12 products: five ready-made ESP32 WLED controllers with proper power wiring, fuses and level shifters; four addressable LED products (5 V WS2812B, 12 V WS2815, RGBW SK6812 and a 16ร16 matrix); and the power supplies, connectors and aluminium channels that make an installation safe and clean.
๐ก Before you buy: Size the power supply first. A 5 V WS2812B LED can draw up to roughly 60 mA at full white, so 300 LEDs could theoretically pull around 18 A; WLED’s automatic brightness limiter lets you cap this to what your supply can deliver. On long 5 V runs, inject power every few metres to avoid colour fading; 12 V WS2815 strips suffer much less voltage drop. The ESP32’s 3.3 V data signal is marginal for 5 V strips, so use a controller with a level shifter, as all the controllers below have or support.

๐ Choosing Strips and Controllers
๐ด
WS2812B (5 V)
The most common and cheapest addressable strip, with the widest choice of densities and shapes. Best for desks, TV backlights and runs up to a few metres per power feed.
๐
WS2815 (12 V)
Runs at 12 V, so it needs less current and suffers less voltage drop over long runs. A backup data line means one failed LED doesn’t kill the rest of the strip. Ideal for rooflines and stairs.
โช
SK6812 RGBW
Adds a dedicated white LED to each pixel, giving pleasant, efficient white light for everyday room lighting, plus full RGB effects when you want them.
๐ง
Controller Features
Look for a level shifter, a fuse, screw terminals sized for your current, and a relay that cuts strip power when off. A microphone enables sound-reactive effects; Ethernet keeps big displays reliable.
๐
Power and Wiring
Use a supply rated about 20% above your capped draw, wire thick enough for the current, and inject power at both ends (and the middle) of long 5 V runs. Always fuse each power feed.

๐ BEST FOR LONG RUNS ยท โญ 4.7/56. BTF-LIGHTING WS2815 Addressable LED Strip (12 V, 16.4 ft, 300 LEDs)
DC 12 V ยท dual-signal redundancy ยท individually addressable 5050 SMD ยท UL listed
Buy Here โ

The WS2815 is the upgrade for long runs: it works at 12 V, so for the same brightness it draws far less current than a 5 V strip and suffers much less voltage drop along the run. Its dual-signal redundancy means a single failed LED won’t stop the rest of the strip, which matters on a roofline you don’t want to climb back up to. BTF-LIGHTING’s version (about 4.7 stars from 512 ratings) is UL listed with 300 LEDs over 16.4 ft (5 m). Pair it with a 12 V supply and a controller that accepts 12 V, such as the BTF SP803E or GLEDOPTO controllers.

Buy Here โ

A full 5 m, 60 LED/m WS2812B strip can theoretically draw more than a typical USB adapter can supply, so a proper 5 V switching supply is essential. Aclorol’s 100 W, 5 V 20 A unit (about 4.5 stars from 195 ratings) is marketed specifically for WS2812B and WS2813 pixel strips and accepts 110 or 220 V AC. With WLED’s brightness limiter set to 16โ18 A it powers one full strip comfortably. These are open-frame supplies with exposed mains terminals: mount them in an enclosure, use the correct mains cable and strain relief, and have someone qualified wire the AC side if you’re unsure. Only 2 were left in stock when we checked.
โ
Pros: 20 A at 5 V; made for pixel strips; universal input.
โ Cons: Exposed mains terminals; needs an enclosure; low stock.
๐ฏ Verdict: A capable 5 V supply for full-length WS2812B projects.
๐ BEST 12 V SUPPLY ยท โญ 4.5/510. LEDMO 12 V 5 A 60 W LED Power Adapter
12 V DC, 5 A ยท 60 W max ยท UL listed ยท plug-in adapter
Buy Here โ

For WS2815 strips and 12 V controllers, a plug-in adapter avoids touching mains wiring at all. LEDMO’s 12 V 5 A adapter is the most-reviewed power supply in this guide (about 4.5 stars from 5,000+ ratings) and is UL listed, which matters for anything left running in your home. At 60 W it suits shorter WS2815 runs or a capped full strip; for a whole 5 m strip at high brightness, choose a higher-wattage 12 V supply. Its barrel plug connects to most WLED controllers’ DC jacks or a screw-terminal adapter.
โ
Pros: UL listed; plug-in; huge review base.
โ Cons: 60 W limits long bright runs.
๐ฏ Verdict: The safe, plug-in supply for 12 V WLED setups.
๐ BEST CONNECTORS ยท โญ 4.5/511. BTF-LIGHTING 3-Pin IP65 Connectors (18 AWG)
Male and female pigtails ยท 3-pin for power + data ยท 18 AWG ยท IP65
Buy Here โ

Being able to unplug a strip from the controller makes installation, testing and repairs much easier. These 3-pin IP65 pigtails (about 4.5 stars from 2,296 ratings) carry power, data and ground on 18 AWG wire, which handles a few amps comfortably over short distances. Solder or use the controller’s terminals on one side and the strip on the other, matching colours carefully: reversing power and ground will destroy the first LED. For higher-current power injection, run separate, thicker power wires alongside.
โ
Pros: Detachable joints; IP65; matches BTF strips.
โ Cons: 18 AWG not enough for full-strip current alone.
๐ฏ Verdict: The tidy way to make LED strips removable.
๐ BEST FOR A PRO FINISH ยท โญ 4.6/512. THMOOTHER Aluminium LED Channels with Diffusers (10 ร 1 m, V-Shape)
V-shape corner profile ยท diffuser covers ยท end caps and mounting clips ยท 10 one-metre lengths
Buy Here โ

Bare strips show every individual LED dot. An aluminium channel with a diffuser turns them into smooth, continuous light and hides the strip, while the metal spreads heat for longer LED life. THMOOTHER’s V-shape profile (about 4.6 stars from 596 ratings) mounts in corners, which is ideal for ceiling coves, under cabinets and along stairs. This pack has ten 1-metre lengths with covers, end caps and clips. Only 5 were left in stock when we checked; THMOOTHER and others sell flat and U-shaped versions too.
โ
Pros: Smooth diffused light; heat sinking; corner mount.
โ Cons: Check strip width fits; low stock.
๐ฏ Verdict: The finishing touch that makes WLED lighting look built in.
๐งฎ How Much Power Do I Need?
| Setup (WS2812B, 5 V) | LEDs | Worst-Case Current | Suggested Supply |
|---|
| 1 m at 60 LED/m (desk) | 60 | ~3.6 A | 5 V 4โ5 A adapter |
| 2.5 m at 60 LED/m (TV backlight) | 150 | ~9 A | 5 V 10 A, or cap brightness |
| 5 m at 60 LED/m (room) | 300 | ~18 A | 5 V 20 A + power injection |
| 16ร16 matrix | 256 | ~15 A | 5 V 10 A with WLED limit |
These worst-case figures assume every LED at full white, using the common rule of thumb of about 60 mA per WS2812B pixel. Real effects draw much less, and WLED’s automatic brightness limiter keeps total current under the value you set, so you can use a smaller supply safely. Always fuse the supply output and use wire rated for the current.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build a WLED controller from a bare ESP32 board?
Yes. Flash WLED from its web installer onto any ESP32 board, connect the strip’s data line to a GPIO through a ~330 ฮฉ resistor, share ground with the strip’s supply, and add a 74AHCT125 level shifter for 5 V strips. Put a 1000 ยตF capacitor across the supply at the strip and a fuse on the power line. Ready-made controllers simply package all of this neatly.
Why do the far end of my LEDs look orange or dim?
That’s voltage drop: the thin copper in a 5 V strip loses voltage over distance, so blue and green fade first. Inject power from the supply at the far end (and the middle of long runs) with thicker wire, lower brightness, or switch to a 12 V WS2815 strip.
Does WLED work with Home Assistant?
Yes. Home Assistant discovers WLED devices on your network automatically and exposes them as lights with effects, presets and segments. WLED also supports MQTT, Alexa, and E1.31/DDP/Art-Net for syncing with lighting software. Our ESP32 MQTT tutorial explains the protocol.
Which ESP32 chip is best for WLED?
The original ESP32 is the most widely supported and drives several outputs well; ESP32-S3 builds are also popular. Most ready-made controllers here use the original ESP32. Single-core chips like the ESP32-C3 work for smaller setups. See our chip comparison hub.
Are LED strips safe to leave on all day?
With a correctly sized, certified power supply, a fuse on each feed, wire rated for the current and strips mounted on aluminium where possible, yes. Avoid running supplies at their limit, keep mains wiring enclosed, and don’t cover strips with insulation or fabric where heat can build up.
